Why did you add local co-op to Vampire Survivors?
Because it's fun (we hope!) and couch co-op was one of the most requested community features. It's also a first step towards someday adding online co-op, if the players want us to do that!
-
How much does the local co-op update cost?
Nothing. The co-op update is completely free on all formats.
-
What are the platforms local co-op is available on?
Steam, Nintendo Switch™, Xbox, Xbox Game Pass, Android, and iOS.
-
When did the local co-op update launch?
17th August 2023!
-
How many players can play local co-op?
Up to 4 players in total in local couch co-op. Be the bullet hell with your besties! Or on your own by using 4 controllers at once! (jk please don't do that to yourself 🙏).
-
[Steam] I'm stuck on the loading screen!
Please just restart Steam; this happens as Steam sometimes doesn't detect a change in the DLC packs that we have recently updated to work with the new engine.
-
How does the couch co-op update change the gameplay?
There are a few slight differences between playing solo and in local co-op, but only a few!
The Friendship Amulet is a co-op only item which allows the person who's collected it to grant a level up to all players, but on a random weapon (or passive if they have maxed all their weapons).
Should you die in local co-op, a coffin will appear which counts down to your revive, but be careful of enemies staying on the coffin for too long 👀.
There's also some helpful additions in the Options menu, such as a button to allow a highlight around the player characters so you can easily see where you are.
-
What options are available in co-op?
- Outline and cursor colour selection;
- Permanent outlines;
- (PC) Assign the first connected controller to Player 1 or Player 2;
- Apply player colour to UI selection arrows;
- Take turns on treasure chests (normally they are pseudo-randomized)
-
Can multiple people play on one keyboard on PC?
Unfortunately we hit some technical limitations, so for now you will need one controller input device (keyboard, controller, bluetooth modded garlic etc.) per player.
-
Can I play local co-op on my mobile device?
Add a few Bluetooth controllers to one mobile device, and sure! Please note though, local co-op is only available in landscape mode.
-
Can I also play local co-op online?
Not officially! For the moment, Vampire Survivors is local co-op for up to 4 players only.
If you still want to play online, we recommend using unofficial solutions like Steam Remote Play Together on PC that lets you play online with friends with Steam right away. We've found these are reliable but do have some flaws that are outside of our control. We usually use Parsec for playtesting.
-
Issue: when playing via Steam Remote Play the screen is just black.
- On the client computer, not the host: Open Steam
- At the left top click on Steam > Settings > Remote play
- Enable 'Advanced client options' and uncheck 'use hardware decoding'.
- Save and re-joining the host.
-
Is there only a couch co-op mode or can I also play against my friends?
There's no versus mode, but we're sure some of you will find a way or two to test how good your friendships are in the co-op.
-
Are there specific local co-op multiplayer levels?
Nope! We designed the co-op mode in a way that you can play through all of Vampire Survivors with friends, but there won't be co-op specific levels.
-
Will there be local co-op focused achievements?
Also nope! We don't want anyone to feel like they HAVE to play co-op to unlock and see everything in the game. You will be able to play the whole of Vampire Survivors with friends, foes or your favourite creatures of the night but it's fully optional.
-
Can I also play the DLCs in local co-op?
Of course! As long as you own a DLC you will be able to play it in local co-op.
-
Do I need to start from the beginning to play the local co-op?
You can switch between co-op and single player before every run. No need to start a new game, and all the unlocks you get during a co-op play session will carry over to your singleplayer save.
-
Can I select the same character as my friends? We all want to play as Poe!
Multiple Poes would tip the balance of the universe, so for now every character can only be selected by one player per run.
-
Will there be future single-player updates for the game?
Yes! We will continue to support the game with free updates and paid DLC packs, but moving forward you will be able to play everything solo (as usual) or in local co-op if you prefer.
-
Will the game be super easy in co-op?
We adjusted the balancing for local co-op play so it is still challenging! For example, the more players join your party the fewer weapon slots each player has.
-
How to play with 1 controller and 1 keyboard/mouse?
Uncheck the "Assign Controller to Player 1" setting in the Options menu. Player 1 will use Mouse/Keyboard, Player 2 the controller.

- Head to Options -> Co-op -> deselect 'Assign Controller to Player 1'.
- Connect Bluetooth controllers for additional players.
- Cast/Stream your mobile device to a TV using one of the following guides:
Android
Apple
This will then enable you to play on your mobile device using touch screen, and the other players can play using controllers while viewing the gameplay on the TV unobstructed.
